Textbook? No, but...

There is no designated textbook for this course, however the structure for the course and much of its content comes from or was inspired by the book pictured here and described below. Though it makes for a good read, parts are showing their age, and the book is not essential to the course.

D is for Digital book coverD is for Digital by Brian W. Kernighan. Paperback: ISBN-10 1463733895; ISBN-13 978-1463733896. Kindle Edition: ASIN B0075XZL2M. Published in print form by CreateSpace, and for the Kindle by Amazon Digital Services, Inc. I ordered mine online from CreateSpace (an Amazon company) here: https://www.createspace.com/3654536. I have two copies on 3-hour reserve at Stauffer. For extra convenience, because this is a computing course, because it saves paper, because it's not dependent on someone having it in stock, and because it is so inexpensive, I highly recommend the Kindle Edition (an electronic book) for less than $10 (possibly free now?): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0075XZL2M/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=disfordig-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0075XZL2M. I don't own a Kindle (e-book reader), but Amazon offers a free Kindle app which I downloaded for my Windows PCs and tablets, and for my Android devices. The app is also available for Mac OS, the iPhone, and the iPad.

Understanding the Digital World book coverAn updated version of Kernighan's book is now available. It's called Understanding the Digital World, and Amazon.ca is selling it here, https://www.amazon.ca/Understanding-Digital-World-Computers-Internet-ebook/dp/B01M3XBS46/ref=pd_sim_351_1. While I'm sure that it, too, is an interesting read, I have not attempted to reconcile the content of CISC P81 with the newer book. I merely mention it exists for those who want to do extra reading and who might prefer something more up-to-date (though slightly more expensive) than the 2011 original.
